Bedford-Stuyvesant

Commonly known as "Bed-Stuy", this densely populated neighborhood in Brooklyn is a busy residential and commercial area. Bed-Stuy, is well-known as one of New York larger neighborhoods and boasts one of the city's fastest-growing populations. The neighborhood has an easy commute to Manhattan and includes lower rents than nearby Williamsburg and Clinton Hill, making this a popular neighborhood for young professionals and students. Those looking to rent in this neighborhood can expect to find their home on beautifully tree-lined, brownstone filled streets.

Historically, Bed-Stuy has been home to large populations of African-Americans and Hassidic Jews. Today, the neighborhood continues to be one of the more ethnically diverse and culturally rich areas in the city! Many of the neighborhoods original history has also been well preserved and the aesthetics of Bed-Stuy have remained constant for decades.

Neighborhood:Bedford Stuyvesant (or, more commonly, “Bed-Stuy”)

Population Density: more densely populated than Brooklyn or New York in the aggregate; it’s a busy residential and commercial area, so expect to see people around at most hours of the day.

Adjacent Neighborhoods:Williamsburg, Clinton Hill, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Brownsville

Public Transit:A, C, G, J, L, M, Z, LIRR (Nostrand Ave)

What’s Here: Bedford-Stuyvesant (or “Bed-Stuy”) is one of New York’s larger neighborhoods. It also boasts one of the city’s fastest-growing populations, with an easy commute to Manhattan and lower rents than nearby Williamsburg and Clinton Hill.

Bed-Stuy is the anchor of Central Brooklyn. And the anchor of Bed-Stuy is Restoration Plaza, a former milk bottling facility turned commercial and cultural hub.

Adventurous gourmands will find much to relish in Bed-Stuy. The Dr Pepper-glazed frog legs from Do Or Dine on Bedford Ave are not to be missed. And those with a sweet tooth should be sure to try the blood orange doughnut from Dough on Lafayette Street. Bed Stuy Fish Fry and Umi Nom are also worth a visit. All of that can be washed down with a cocktail at Project Parlor or a craft beer from Black Swan.

Flat or Tall: Downtown Brooklyn and the Williamsburg waterfront may be home to a bevy of new high rises. Bed-Stuy, on the other hand, retains that classic tree-lined, brownstone Brooklyn charm.

History: One great thing about Bed-Stuy’s history is how well it remains on display. Though its demographics are consistently in flux, the aesthetics of Bed-Stuy have remained constant for decades with several landmarks still in place, including the Alice and Agate Court Historic District.

Bed-Stuy has also spawned many well-known actors, musicians and athletes, including Jackie Gleason, Lena Horne, Carl Sagan, Tracy Morgan, Jay-Z, Chris Rock, Notorious B.I.G., Mike Tyson and many more.

Historically, Bed-Stuy has been home to large populations of African-Americans and Hassidic Jews. Today, those groups and many others make Bed-Stuy of the more ethnically diverse and culturally rich areas of the city.

Activities:With the Pratt Institute located in nearby Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy enjoys a thriving gallery scene, including Zion Gallery, The Bishop and the Brooklynite Gallery, among others. You can also go green by volunteering at one of the 15 neighborhood gardens benefiting from a recent federal grant.

Check it Out: Get culture and a bit of exercise with the SONYA Studio Stroll every June, a free tour of the area’s best galleries and exhibitions. You can also quench your thirst with the borough’s best drinks at the Tap and Cork Brooklyn Beer and Wine Festival every August.
