New York University's Tandon School of Engineering is the engineering and applied sciences school of New York University, a private, non-profit university. Tandon is organized into 11 departments: Applied Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil and Urban Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Finance and Risk Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Technology, Culture and Society, and Technology Management and Innovation. The school is the result of a merger between NYU's School of Engineering, which was founded in 1854 as the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute, also founded in the mid-1850s. NYU Tandon currently operates 10 buildings in Downtown Brooklyn, eight of which are for academic and administrative purposes between Flatbush Avenue and Jay Street. Rogers Hall and the Jacobs Academic Building are interconnected structures with classrooms, research labs, academic offices, and the MakerSpace, a state-of-the-art prototyping hub equipped with 3-D printers, laser cutters, and milling machines. There are two residence halls in Downtown Brooklyn near Tandon's campus: Clark Street, which offers apartment living for first-year students and upper-level students, and Othmer Hall, which offers both apartments and traditional dorms in an 18-story building. Othmer Hall is home to the Women @ Tandon engagement community.
