Midtown East, like the rest of Manhattan, was historically farmland during the early days. Affluent families were drawn to the region because of its peaceful surroundings and convenient access to the East River, which made the area ideal for agriculture.
During the 1800’s and early 1900’s, Midtown East became a hotspot for industry, welcoming factories, breweries, and slaughterhouses. With industry came workers, mostly Irish and German immigrants who contributed to the area with projects such as the construction of Saint Patrick's Cathedral in 1879.
By the time Grand Central Terminal was built in 1913, the neighborhood was still largely industrial. That changed once the depression hit in the 1930’s. Many jobs were lost and the area began to decay. Things began to turn around once the industrial buildings and tenements were bought and mostly demolished to make way for more affluent living spaces. The United Nations Building and the landmarking of The Chrysler Building and Grand Central solidified the affluent identity of the neighborhood.
Midtown East is home to a slew of high-rise residential complexes with unrivaled views of the East River. It also has some of the most beautiful art deco skyscrapers in the city. While some homes in the area are low to mid rise structures, most of the buildings here add a lot to the skyline of Midtown.
Midtown East is where you'll find New York’s City’s most picturesque structures. People flock to the area to gaze in awe at the Art Deco towers and to shop at high-end boutiques.
Due to the residential and commercial nature of the neighborhood, the atmosphere in the evening isn't as lively as it is downtown. It's more subdued, relaxing, and elegant, with plenty of restaurants and pubs to visit once the sun sets.
Midtown East is a family friendly neighborhood that offers A-list cultural attractions as well as quick access to the rest of the city. There are plenty of schools in the area as well as popular parks and attractions to keep the young ones occupied. Extremely safe, Midtown East is ideal for families.
The New York City subway system provides access to Midtown East via multiple train lines. The 4, 5, and 6 trains take you to the west side of the neighborhood. The 7 train provides access to the southern part of the neighborhood while the N, R, and W trains provide access to the north. The E and M trains take you to the middle of the area.
Biking isn’t incredibly popular in the neighborhood, but there are plenty of bike lanes and Citi Bike docking stations.
Driving is very popular here. Parking is a bit scarce, but the traffic isn’t too bad unless it's rush hour.
