Triangle Below Canal, more famously known as TriBeCa, is the neighborhood located south of SoHo, north of the Financial District and east of Chinatown. The neighborhood gained its reputation when artists and residents organized to change the zoning to live/work status after much of the manufacturing and commercial activity that had dominated the area left. Artists filled up these affordable lofts and created a vibrant art and nightlife scene that continues to this day. Today Tribeca is well-known for its numerous movie industry and celebrity residents, converted loft apartments, and charming cobble-stone streets. This lower Manhattan neighborhood is one of the most sought after zipcodes in codes in the entire metropolis. The neighborhood is also famous for the Tribeca Film Center and Tribeca Film Festival.

Neighborhood: TriBeCa

Adjacent Neighborhoods: TriBeCa is an acronym for Triangle Below Canal, but in its broader use it borders SoHo to the north, Chinatown to the East, the Financial district to the South and the Hudson River to the West.

Population Density: There were over 17,000 residents living in TriBeCa according to the 2010 census. In the daytime the streets are bustling with workday activity, often upscale, film industry and artist types. At night the streets thin out quite a bit, but there is still the activity of well-heeled residents enjoying, and participating in, cultural events and nightlife.

Public Transit: Subway: 1,2,3,9,A,C,E,6 all stop in TriBeCa.Buses:M20, M21, M6 crosstown. By car: the Holland Tunnel is in the North-West corner of the neighborhood and connects Manhattan and New Jersey.Canal St. shoots crosstown to the Manhattan Bridge and Brooklyn

What’s Here?: Hit the Tribeca Film Festival, now one of the most acclaimed independent film festivals in the world. Also check out the burgeoning art gallery scene on Duane St., N. Moore St. and Reade St. If you’re up for outdoor activity, Tribeca has quick access to the Hudson River Park and the West Side Bike Path, which will cover you for outdoor activity and inactivity as you like.

There is no shortage of nightlife and upscale dining. Tribeca Grill, Nobu, Megu, Locande Verde and many other establishments continue to set the bar for restaurant culture, making Tribeca a destination for foodies, but the south end of the neighborhood toward the financial district reveals a number of watering holes: the Patriot Saloon, Raccoon Lodge, Fisherman’s Arms etc.For live music and dancing check out Santos Party House and The Canal Room.

Flat or tall?: Lots of loft spaces, with some high-rises mixed in.

History: By the early 70′s, much of the manufacturing and commercial activity that had dominated the neighborhood had left, leaving a plethora of abandoned and inexpensive loft spaces.Following the example set in neighboring SoHo a few years before, artists and residents organized to change the zoning to live/work status, allowing these spaces to be used as residences.Because of their size and affordability, artists filled them up and a vibrant art and nightlife scene began which still resonates today.

A few years later, TriBeCa’s most famous resident and biggest cheerleader/philanthropist, Robert De Niro, helped set the tone for its current prominence by first co-founding well-known restaurants Tribeca Grill and Nobu (some of the very best sushi in New York!), then later as founder of the Tribeca Film Center and Tribeca Film Festival.

With its numerous movie industry and celebrity residents, converted loft apartments and charming cobble-stone streets, this lower Manhattan neighborhood is one of the most sought after zipcodes in the entire metropolis.

Activities: People-watching, celebrity-watching, eating.
