What’s Here?: Prospect Lefferts Gardens is a peaceful residential area residing on the SE corner of Prospect Park. It is home to wide, tree-lined streets and a vibrant West Indian community. Recently, the area has begun to attract an influx of families and young professionals from Manhattan and Park Slope seeking more space for their money, resulting in a flourish of new commercial and housing options. The tight-knit neighborhood has a reputation for active community participation and has recently enacted a number of neighborhood beautification projects, including one to add murals painted by local artists to unsightly facades.

Flat or Tall?: Flat. Prospect Lefferts Gardens offers some of the city’s most desirable turn-of-the-century architecture for a fraction of the price of its neighbors across the Park. The area’s emphasis on long-term homeownership has restricted fast development and kept many homes from being divided up into individual apartments.

History: The most impressive properties of the area date back to the 1890′s when James Lefferts, a descendant of Dutch settlers, divided up his family farm into what is now the Historic District. There has been some confusion since 1968, when the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association gave the entire area its current title.

Activities: Scour the main thoroughfare, Flatbush Avenue, for local goods at any number of grocery, hardware, and pharmacy stores. Head to Prospect Park for a game of volleyball or soccer in the Parade Grounds, or delight in the adorable animals cavorting at the Zoo. Pick up a stylish wardrobe at the Monk’s Trunk a vintage and children’s clothing store and take your favorite kid for a class at the Youth Arts Academy or for a tour of the impressive Brooklyn Museum. Treat yourself to an array of Caribbean delicacies at neighborhood institutions Culpeppers and De Hot Pot, or enjoy the sophisticated dining scene at Le Paddock wine bar.

Check it out: Prospect Park’s Wollman Rink, a great ice-skating venue available to the public, is available through much of the winter. In the meantime, enjoy crafts, yoga and face-painting at the Prospect Park 5-K Fun Run, which raises awareness about midwifery options in maternity care, or put your best-dressed civic foot forward for dinner, dancing and cocktails at the annual Prospect Park Alliance Ball.
