SoHo

SoHo, ada South of Houston, boasts an artistic legacy and has become one of the city's premier shopping corridors. The neighborhood itself is adjacent to NoHo, West Village, Greenwich Village, Nolita, Little Italy/Chinatown and Tribeca. Those who choose to make their home in the area will never ceased to be amazed with the abundance of tourists, young professionals and celebrities that frequent this neighborhood. SoHo is home to plenty of beautiful cast-iron pre-war buildings and lofts. The neighborhood itself has relatively few high-rises, so those looking to rent an apartment in an luxury high-rise building may have a harder time doing so.

Neighborhood: SoHo

Population: 13,575 people; population density 40,394 people per square mile (city-wide: 26,798 people per square mile)

Adjacent Neighborhoods: NoHo, West Village, Greenwich Village, Nolita, Little Italy/Chinatown, TriBeCa

Public Transit: N/R (Prince St.), 6 (Spring St.), B/D/F/M (Broadway/Lafayette)

What’s Here?: SoHo boasts an artistic legacy and has become one of the city’s premier shopping corridors. Several fashion retailers have high-end stores in SoHo, including Versace, Burberry, John Varvatos, Bebe, Marc Jacobs, DKNY, Adidas, Luis Vuitton, Lululemon Athletica and Bloomingdale’s. SoHo is filled with young professionals, historical landmarks, and breathtaking nightlife. The food scene is equally trendy dine and dance at Niko, a traditional Japanese restaurant in the heart of Soho, surround yourself in greenery at David Burke’s Kitchen, or grab a bite and relax at the hip and upscale Spring Lounge and Lure Fishbar. Also don’t forget to check out the New Museum of Contemporary Art, located at 583 Broadway or delve into the history of the FDNY at the NYC Fire Museum. Stop by the SoHo Grand Hotel to spy on your favorite celebrities.

Flat or Tall?: Nearly all of SoHo is included in the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District Extension, the world’s best collection of cast-iron architecture. SoHo is full of beautiful cast-iron pre-war buildings and lofts. There are relatively few high-rises in SoHo.

History: SoHo has had a long, rich (and checkered) history. As recently as the 1950s it was a red-light district, and before that it was by turns the site of the city’s primary source of freshwater, a lively theater and shopping area and a heavy manufacturing district. SoHo (which means “South of Houston”) was the first neighborhood to receive an acronym; Chester Rapki, an urban planner who created this naming convention, coined this acronym in 1962. Other names given by this convention include TriBeCa (Triangle Below Canal), NoMad (North of Madison Square) and NoHo (North of Houston).

Activities: Trendy shopping, boutique restaurants, museums, street fairs, and celebrity watching await you. If chess is your game, stop by SoHo Square Park or bring your dog for hours of fun to the new SoHo Grand dog park.

Check it out: Celebrate September’s New York Fashion Week at SoHo’s trendy boutiques featuring unbeatable sample sales. Enjoy October’s 6th Annual Royal Masquerade Ball at the Kastel Bar and Lounge at the Trump SoHo, or ring in the New Year at Mister H’s in the Mondrian SoHo.
