Bay Ridge

Located next to the Narrows Strait of New York Bay, Bay Ridge is a naturally occurring retirement community (a fifth of its residents are age 60 years and older). The neighborhood itself draws in families with it's many limestone and brownstone row houses and brick houses with yards. There is an abundance of Norewgian and Dutch influences within the neighborhood but the area has also attracted Irish, Italian and Greek immigrants. Those who aim to make Bay Ridge their new home can look forward to enjoying the beautiful Owl Head Park, with its skate park, dog run, spray pool, playground and basketball courts.

Neighborhood: Bay Ridge (7th Avenue/Belt Parkway/65th Street)

Population: 80,689 people. 45,350 people per square mile. Population Density of Brooklyn: 34,917 people per square mile

Adjacent Neighborhoods: Sunset Park, Dyker Heights, the Narrows Strait of New York Bay

Public Transit: R at Bayridge to 95th Street. Express buses 27 and 37.

What’s Here?: Generations of families settle and stay in this seaside neighborhood. They take their children to baseball games, host meals in their homes and frequent the local family style restaurant on the weekends. The area is known as a naturally occurring retirement community, with about a fifth of its residents age 60 years and older.

Flat or Tall?: Bay Ridge is a pocket of limestone and brownstone row houses and brick houses with yards nestled in the Belt Parkway. The area is largely flat and residential.

History: The history of Bay Ridge is tied to its proximity to New York Bay. Norwegian and Dutch sailors moved here in the early 1900s, and have had a lasting influence with some of the restaurants as well as the Norwegian Constitution Day parade that marches along 3rd Avenue every year. The area also absorbed Irish, Italian and Greek immigrants who have now grown roots in this neighborhood and made it their own.

Activities: This is a neighborhood you move to for its distinctly Brooklyn family feel. If you live in Bay Ridge, you will want to spend a lot of time at Owl Head Park. With its skate park, dog run, spray pool, playground, basketball courts and beautiful views of the Verrazano Bridge, on a beautiful day there’s no better place to be.

Check it out: Third and 5th avenues are Bay Ridge’s main commercial streets, where you will find banks and delis and restaurants. Play tourist and take one of the free daily tours of the Harbor Defense Museum or visit the lesser known and less crowded September 11 memorial at the 69th Street Pier. For the best wings in Brooklyn, hit up Ketel Black Pub with weekday specials and a New York sports game always on the screens.
