Southern Brooklyn

Home to a large population of Orthodox Jews, Haitians and Russians, Southern Brooklyn has a wide diverse array of dinig and shopping experiences while located just an hour away from Manhattan by train. Those looking to get away from the city and live in a more suburban neighborhood will find their new home within Southern Brooklyn. The housing inventory in the area consists of mainly six or seven story high apartment buildings and has an anomalous section of Victorian houses with yard and garages. Residents in the area enjoy sunbathing at Coney Island, strolling in Prospect Park and riding the many beautiful bike paths the area has to offer.

Neighborhood: Southern Brooklyn (Everything west and south of Canarsie Ditmas Park, Flatlands, Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Borough Park, Marine Park, Flatbush, Prospect Park South, Prospect Lefferts Gardens)

Population: About 850,000. Population Density of Brooklyn: 34,917 people per square mile

Adjacent Neighborhoods: Northern Brooklyn

Public Transit: 2/5 from Franklin Avenue to Flatbush Avenue, 3/4 from Franklin Avenue to Crown Heights Utica Avenue, B/Q from Prospect Park to Coney Island Stillwell Avenue, F from Church Avenue to Coney Island Stillwell Avenue, N from 8th Avenue to Coney Island Stillwell Avenue and the D from 9th Avenue to Coney Island Stillwell Avenue

What’s Here?: This large swath of Brooklyn offers a cross section of the world including the borough’s Little Bangladesh, a large Orthodox Jewish community, and Haitian and Russian neighborhoods. Southern Brooklyn boasts parks, beaches, and an incredibly diverse array of dining and shopping experiences, all within about an hour of Manhattan by train.

Flat or Tall?: Generally speaking, the further you get from Manhattan, the more neighborhood-like you will find the construction. Southern Brooklyn is mostly flat, with apartment buildings jutting up to six or seven stories. Ditmas Park is an incredible, but anomalous, section of Victorian houses with yards and garages outfitted with basketball hoops and driveways.

History: Archeologists have evidence of food preparation in Marine Park dating back to as early as 800 AD. With its miles of paved roads and block after block of development, it is hard to imagine now, but this area was a prime fishing and farming spot for the Native Americans who originally inhabited the land.

Activities: From basking in the sun at Coney Island or horseback riding in Prospect Park, Southern Brooklyn is the heart and soul of this lively and diverse borough. When in this area, you have access to a number of renowned restaurants. If you like to explore by bike, the Brooklyn Greenway offers a pleasant tour along the water. Beautiful bike paths will lead you all the way out to Coney Island without hassle.

Check it out: There’s a long list of must-try restaurants in Southern Brooklyn, including Spumoni Garden for their pizza. Try your luck getting one of the 15 seats at DiFara Pizza, a celebrated institution in Midwood. The strip of restaurants cropping up on Cortelyou in Kensington offer an array of mouth watering choices from Mediterranean at Mimi’s Hummus, to New American at the Farm on Adderly and Filipino fusion at Purple Yam. For an unrivaled roast beef sandwich, stop in at Brennan and Carr in Sheepshead Bay. For the truly adventuresome, journey out to Tatiana in Brighton Beach for an opulent Russian nightclub experience.
