Kensington is a predominantly residential area that consists of housing types that run the gamut from brick rowhouses to detached one-family Victorians to apartment buildings. Pre-war brick apartment buildings dominate the Ocean Parkway and Coney Island Avenue frontage, including many that operate as co-ops. The main commercial streets are Coney Island Avenue, Church Avenue, Ditmas Avenue, and McDonald Avenue. Ocean Parkway bisects the neighborhood east-west. Myriads of families have settled in Kensington, bringing traditions with them. The area may be quiet but it's filled with life. Besides Church Avenue, some smaller shopping districts can be found on Ditmas Avenue and Cortelyou Road. There is also a Food Town supermarket on McDonald Avenue that recently (last year) expanded due to persuasion from the local residents. One of the coolest places to visit in Kensington is the Kensington Stables, just outside Prospect Park. They offer riding lessons for those who are more the city slicker type.

BOROUGH PARK

A diverse and slightly upscale neighborhood, Borough Park is a residential area in Brooklyn that hosts many events. Directly under the Green-Wood cemetery, this diverse neighborhood is popular yet peaceful.

Fun Facts and History of Borough Park

Borough Park had a later history than most of Brooklyn. Originally developed in 1887, the neighborhood was used for cottages and summer homes for the people of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Starting in the early 1900's, the Jewish population of Borough Park exploded. Many of the religious institutions and cultural centers they built back then still stand today. During and after WWII, Jewish refugees came to the neighborhood with the promise of community and safety.

By the early 2000's, Borough Park was christened the "baby boom capital" of New York due to the high birth rates here. Since then, business in the area exploded, making Borough Park a highly sought after neighborhood for lavish celebrations.
