Nestled between Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea is a newer addition to the Manhattan neighborhood family. Hudson Yards is a development that broke ground in 2012 and has seen major progress within the last few years. It attempts to entice all New Yorkers via residential buildings, art centers, public gardens, and green spaces.
Before Hudson Yards, there was The West Side Yard, which is used as a storage space for the trains of the Long Island Rail Road. Much of the land had been consolidated over the years, meaning there was a decent amount of space that could be used for development. The plan for mixed-use development was put forth in 2008 and the groundbreaking for 10 Hudson Yards took place in December of 2012.
Since then, eight of the proposed sixteen buildings have been completed, as well as a public green space. The next phase of Hudson Yards construction will finish out the project and is expected to be complete in 2024. Several major businesses have already begun calling this neighborhood “home.” The largest Equinox facility in the world, for example, resides in Hudson Yards. More businesses are making their way here every day.
Most buildings in Hudson Yards are tall, modern skyscrapers, with unique designs and impressive heights. Other buildings, like The Shed arts center, are lower to the ground, but still have that modern flair that the neighborhood is known for. Several buildings in this development rank amongst the tallest in the city.
Hudson Yards is trying to draw crowds here, though some New Yorkers see it as a playground for the rich. That said, it’s a sleek place with several public spaces like an arts center, a mall, and a green space with a sculpture.
There are also several office buildings here, with more to come, so the neighborhood is always on the busier side. It’s a smaller area that even tourists can visit, so people seeking to spend time in this area should expect it to be busy.
Hudson Yards is a very safe area. Though there are no public schools designated in this neighborhood, there are plenty of options around for children who live here. This area is always busy, so peace and quiet are difficult to come by. That said, the homes here are lovely and large, so families should be quite happy here.
The New York City subway system provides access to Hudson Yards via the 7 train.
Biking isn’t super popular within the neighborhood, though it’s a popular way to travel to the area. There are also several Citi Bike docking stations for your convenience.
Driving within the neighborhood can be a bit hectic since it’s connected to the West Side Highway, though the real annoyance only occurs during rush hour. The residential buildings have private parking.
