Fun Facts and History of Red Hook

Named by the Dutch for the red clay that was found here when the area was colonized in 1636. The area was used for shipping and family estates until the American Revolution, when a large fort, called Fort Defiance, was built just before the Battle of Long Island.

The 1800's saw Red Hook transform into an industrial powerhouse. The ports were revitalized between the 1840's and 60's due to the deepening of the Gowanus canal and increased business from the formation of the Erie Canal. One might think this was great for the neighborhood. However, this success attracted organized crime by the 1920's.

Red Hook continued to have a poor reputation throughout the 1900's, though industry…
