DESCRIPTION
This fabulous 1700 square foot loft in the heart of
historic SoHo, at Grand and Mercer, offers all the quintessential
elements of an artist loft in a unique historic building with a
modern renovation. These "must have" items include an open studio
floor plan, 12ft ceilings, classic fluted columns, a wood burning
fireplace, brick walls and hardwood floors. It has nine, 8'x4'
double paned windows. This 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit offers more than
ample storage with ceiling to floor closets, as well as a 10'x15'
storage room in the basement. Architect William Massey, head of
Cranbrook School of Architecture (and featured in Dwell Magazine)
designed the open chef's kitchen and spectacular bathrooms. The
first, a dramatic black granite/white marble spa steam shower with
alcove seating, features European rainhead and hand held shower
fixtures, and an Ingo Maurer towel light. An opaque window to the
living room provides a soft relaxing ambient light. The master
bath, wrapped in Brazilian slate features a jacuzzi tub, rainhead
shower and body sprays, a Vivendi cabinet and Spanish floating sink
cabinet. The studio opens on a floor to ceiling, steel frame
bookcase covered by three 11' mirrored panels, that glide on a
ceiling track. This 1860's building with its 2' thick walls has
recently been totally renovated including a new, large passenger
elevator that opens on to an amazing common roof terrace with open
city views. Individual central air condition units and a new hot
water heating system-boiler, risers and radiators-were added as
well as a building water filtration system; renovated lobbies, and
hallways; building vaulting and facade repairs.

Fun Facts and History of SoHo

During the era of Dutch colonialism, SoHo was the site of the first free Black settlement in Manhattan. The land would remain largely rural until the draining of the Collect Pond due to pollution. Soon after, Broadway and Canal street were paved and people began to come in droves.

During the early and mid 1800's SoHo began constructing cast iron buildings in order to reduce the risk of fires, which had become common in the city. The buildings allowed for large windows and apartments. The wealthy elites of Manhattan called this place home until the invention of Modern Steel, which allowed for the development of skyscrapers.
