About the Neighborhood:

The Lower East Side is one of the most distinctive neighborhoods in Manhattan. Located south of Houston Street and east of Broadway, this colorful neighborhood is an excellent place to shop at upscale boutiques, dine at extraordinary restaurants, or just hang out. The most prominent mark of the Lower East Side's history is the architecture: the character of the neighborhood is crafted by the many four and five story buildings that still stand over a hundred years later. During the day it is a charming place to be, but it really comes alive at night. For young people looking for a great place to enjoy Manhattan nightlife, the Lower East Side offers an unparalleled experience unlike any other; a surfeit of premier bars, clubs, art galleries, and music venues make it the place to go.

The British conquered the settlement in 1664 and kept Bowery as the main route in and out of the city. The area was home to a variety of farms and manors up until around the American Revolution. The population of the city was expanding fast, and the estates and farms that made up the area were sold off to the city for things likeā€¦
