What’s Here: West Bronx is the collection of a more than a dozen neighborhoods situated to the west of the Bronx River. These neighborhoods include South Bronx, Riverdale, Fordham and Woodlawn, among others. This area also boasts some of the borough’s most iconic landmarks. Nearby is both the Bronx Zoo and The New York Botanical Garden, two highlights of not just The Bronx, but the entire city.

Probably the most famous attraction in the Bronx, however, is Yankee Stadium. The Bronx Bombers have called The Bronx home since 1923. Since that time, their games have become one of the signature sporting events in the country.

The Bronx is also home to other attractions such as Arthur Avenue, which is now regarded to be New York’s true Little Italy, surpassing similar neighborhoods throughout the city in both culture and cuisine. The wide expanse of the Grand Concourse boasts many architectural highlights. And the High Bridge, which is New York’s oldest bridge, was reopened as a pedestrian bridge in 2014.

Flat or Tall: Around 1.4 million people live in The Bronx, with just under half of that figure living in the West Bronx. The two halves are about the same, so it’s safe to say it’s less dense in West Bronx. Riverdale, in particular, is one of the most beautiful and scenic neighborhoods in the entire city.

History: The Bronx has its share of significant cultural contributions. Edgar Allan Poe spent the last years of his life in the borough and his cottage remains a tourist attraction. And of course, as the home of 27 World Series titles, Yankee Stadium has taken on a sort of hallowed ground to sporting fans.

However, it is in the realm of music where The Bronx has given the most to the world. Very few places can boast creating a whole genre of music. But, it is a widely agreed upon fact that rap music originated in The Bronx. There’s even an address. Hip hop pilgrims can visit 1520 Sedgwick Avenue with the full knowledge that the music started on that very spot.

The Cross Bronx Expressway, for better or worse, remains a controversial legacy of urban planning. And though it may be an eyesore, few places outside of The Bronx can boast a culturally relevant expressway.

Activities: The Bronx is home to great events such as The New York Road Runner’s Association Bronx 10-miler, as well as the Tour de Bronx, the largest free cycling event in the state of New York. Parched participants can quench their thirst at The Bronx Beer Hall, a relatively new addition to the borough.

Check it Out: The Bronx Zoo has events throughout the year such as Halloween’s “Boo in the Zoo” and animal-specific celebrations like National Bison Day. Foodies should be sure to check out the Ferragosto festival held every September near Arthur Avenue.
