San Francisco is the cultural and financial center of Northern California. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the entire country with a population of over 850,000 residents in only 47 squares miles of space. San Francisco is famous for its tech industry, high standard of living, and eccentric residents but there is so much more you likely didn’t know about this city. Read on to learn more, and if you want to rent here, be sure to check out the apartments and listings on our site.

Atmosphere

The vibe and atmosphere within San Francisco is one that is completely unique to the area. It has an eclectic mix of architecture, a variety of residents and cultures, a blend of different neighborhoods, and is home to many well known companies. The overall vibe of the city will also change from neighborhood to neighborhood as some are full of tech companies and highly educated individuals, and others are world-renowned for their culture and interesting residents. The tech industry is huge in the San Francisco area as many companies including Uber, Reddit, Craigslist, Pinterest, AirBnB, and Mozilla all have their headquarters here.

The city is widely regarded to have one of the highest standards of living on the nation. The weather is great, the people come from all over the world, average income is high and there are lots of things to do. The city is also a center of liberal activism in the country and is accepting of most people.

There are numerous famous cultural and historical landmarks located in San Francisco, so it is a popular place for tourists to visit. Also, the city is full of beaches and parks for those who love to spend some time outside. All things considered, very few cities are as diverse as San Francisco or have as much to offer its residents. It is also incredibly safe, and is home to a number of popular nightclubs, restaurants, and bars.

History

San Francisco was founded by colonists from Spain way back in 1776. The California Gold Rush in 1849 brought huge growth to the area and made it the largest city on the West Coast. While it has experienced some ups and downs in its history, San Francisco is still growing and developing to this day.

When it comes to cost of living and rental costs, it doesn’t get much more expensive than San Francisco. The average rent for an apartment in San Francisco is over $3800, which is easily among the most expensive on the planet. However, when you consider the work opportunities, weather, culture, atmosphere, location, and reputation of San Francisco, it is no surprise why it is a popular and expensive place to live and rent.

While normally there is a lot of variety in terms of rental costs in a large city, you aren’t likely to find cheap rent anywhere in the city as it is an extremely desirable place to live and thus, all cheap rentals are likely to be all taken. So while the prices may not have a ton of variety, the options when it comes to real estate definitely do. San Francisco has architecture from many different eras and thus, you have your choice of where you would like to live and rent. Many of the properties are Victorian and are an ode to the San Francisco of yesteryears. These come in a wide variety of styles and colors for those who like some character or charm in their homes.

However, if you prefer a more modern approach to architecture, there are plenty of home options of that type too. There are plenty of high-rise apartment buildings to rent as well as older buildings that have been renovated and updated during the years. You are likely not going to find too many brand new buildings (as undeveloped land in the area is hard to come by), but there are still plenty of modern places to rent. One thing San Francisco largely lacks are giant lots of large, single family homes, but that is to be expected in a city as dense populated and jam-packed as this one. No matter what your tastes are, you can find your perfect home in San Francisco, as long as you are financially stable.

Getting Around

Driving can be a bit tough here due to the dense population and hilly topography. While about 30% of people still drive to work every day, there are generally easier and simpler ways of getting around the city. The public transportation in San Francisco is top notch and is used by a large chunk of the population to get to work and get around in general. There are streetcars, a subway system, and a large fleet of buses that can all get you around San Francisco with ease. Also, San Francisco is one of the most walkable places in the entire country and cycling is a popular way of getting around. The weather and density of the city make these options much more attractive than driving to many residents.
