There’s always so much going on in New York City that it’s hard to choose just one activity. Thankfully, parades are a great option for those who want to experience a lot at once. NYC has a lot of parades that are usually hosted annually. There are parades that cater to everyone, and parades that are more categorized. You’ve most likely heard of some famous ones like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Village Halloween Parade, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Pride Parade, and more. This is our list of upcoming parades that are less popular, but just as exciting to attend.
1. Chinese New Year Parade

This parade takes place in Manhattan’s Chinatown annually. Chinese New Year is determined by the Lunar calendar so the date varies each year. The holiday lands on Feb. 1 this year and lasts two weeks. The parade will usually go down Mott and Canal St and end at Sara. D Roosevelt Park. There will be other activities besides the parade, like street vendors so get ready to spend some money on some delicious treats and local delicacies.
Flushing, home to NYC’s first and largest Chinatown, also has a separate Chinese New Year parade and celebration.
2. Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival

This colorful festival and parade can be seen from miles away (figuratively). People can be seen parading around wearing loud and outrageous bonnets. Large Easter eggs are also planted around the city during this time of the year. Some participants in the festival attend Sunday mass before parading their hats around. Join for an afternoon of fun and excitement!
3. Dance Parade

This is the 15th year this parade has been held and will feature over 10,000 dancers. Everyone has something different and eye-catching to perform, so the parade showcases a variety of different dance styles. This particular parade will stop for a moment at “Grandstand” which is 4th Ave and 8th St, where dancers have 40 seconds to perform their piece or style.
4. Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Coney Island is a city full of strange attractions, and the Mermaid Parade is one that is not to be missed! This parade acts as a tribute to Coney Island’s seaside escape and has been a celebration since 1983. People dress up in their own versions of mermaids, but there are also costumes like various sea creatures, pirates, and sailors. This parade has often been visited by celebrities too.
5. Colombian Flower Festival Parade

Did you know that most cut flowers sold in the United States come from Columbia? Feria de las Flores in Medellin, Columbia is a week-long festival with over 500 silleteros (flower sellers) marching in their parade. In NYC, this festival and parade features many flower designs, live music, dancers, and street performances.
6. 133rd Annual Feast of Saint Rocco

The St. Rocco Society was founded in 1889 by immigrants from the Southern Italian City of Potenza and has become one of the oldest Italian American societies in New York State. Every year, they host the Annual Feast of Saint Rocco which is a procession held in front of the Saint Rocco’s statue. St. Rocco was a “miracle healer,” and a lot of Italians and even people all over the world worship him and his legacy. The feast is a long celebration with tons of Italian food, live music, and performances.
7. African-American Day Parade

The Afro-American Day Parade started in 1969 and has been taking place every year. The parade is held in Harlem and it represents the unity and excellence among the Black community. The parade is a non-profit organization, and has developed into a community that celebrates their achievements, talents, heritage, and legacy.
8. Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade

Who doesn’t like dogs dressed up in cute costumes? The Halloween dog parade has inspired dog memes like this one and takes place in the East Village. Owners put their creative thinking hats on and dress up their pups as creatively as possible. The most dedicated ones even dress up with their dogs. There are prizes for each category that is judged, plus looking at dogs in costumes is always a treat for the eyes.
9. Veterans Day Parade

Celebrate Veterans Day with the individuals who have helped serve this country. Elaborate floats, veterans groups, and active military units march through the city in honor of the day. This NYC event is actually one of the biggest Veterans Day celebrations in the country with over 25,000 attendees each year.
