Located right above Coney Island, Gravesend has a long, fascinating history as a coastal town. Once the entertainment capital of Brooklyn, Gravesend is now a popular residential neighborhood full of spacious single family homes.
Not only is Gravesend one of the first Dutch settlements in the New Netherlands, it’s also the only settlement that was founded by a woman. Lady Deborah Moody, her and her followers having been excommunicated for being Anabaptists, were sold the land and founded the Town of Gravesend.
Gravesend became several farms and a suburban haven for the people of Kings County. However, with the sudden popularity of Sheepshead Bay, then part of Gravesend, the town decided to become more of a resort community, building race tracks and many hotels. Gravesend became part of Brooklyn in 1894 and part of the larger New York City in 1898.
The racetracks of Gravesend had to close in 1910 due to New York outlawing horse races. Coney Island then took most of the business Gravesend came to enjoy. By the 1990’s, the neighborhood found its residential glory once again, and is now a popular neighborhood for upscale residents.
Gravesend has a little bit of everything, but the talk of the town are the large, single family houses that line the streets here. Taller buildings, like mid to high rise apartment complexes, dot the area, especially by the water.
Gravesend is a very suburban area that many New Yorkers look to for peace and quiet. There are some fun activities to do, especially by the water and Coney Island, but the vast majority of the neighborhood is calm and residential.
By the water, it's a slightly different story. Here you can find more restaurants, bars, and even a small amusement park. That said, this area is still respectful of the vibe that the rest of the neighborhood perpetuates.
This neighborhood has great families, especially those with multiple kids. Homes here are spacious, there are good schools in the area, it’s close to several hospitals and there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep you entertained. Families will find themselves very happy here.
The New York City subway system provides access via the D, F, N, Q, and W trains.
Biking isn’t particularly popular here, but it’s still doable. There are wide roads and not much traffic. Citi Bike docking stations are few and far between.
Driving is very popular here. There’s little traffic and ample parking.
