Some of the roads traversed by hipsters and artists on their bikes today are trails cut by Native Americans. Taken over by the Dutch, the land became food and tobacco farms, and then transitioned into an industrial hotspot in the 1800’s.
The factories of Bushwick primarily produced sugar, oil, and various chemicals. These factories brought many immigrants, especially German ones, to the neighborhood. These immigrants opened many breweries and Bushwick was soon named as the “beer capital of the Northeast.”
During the late 1800’s, Bushwick garnered more of an Italian population as well, though industry still dominated the neighborhood until after WWII, when many of the factories closed their doors. The neighborhood regressed in the late 1970s after rioting, but within the last decade, the City has poured resources into the neighborhood to rebuild and restore the area. Now the neighborhood is popular with emerging artists, comics, and musicians.
Most of the buildings in Bushwick were built before 1939 and the area is relatively flat. Row houses and townhouses make up most of the rental properties. Parts of Bushwick are very industrial, and it is not uncommon to find a warehouse converted into trendy, new living spaces.

Bushwick is a very safe neighborhood. The crime rate is low and the neighborhood provides easy access to hospitals. There’s plenty to keep your family busy in Bushwick as well. The nightlife can get a bit noisy. But if you don’t mind that, then Bushwick is a great place for families.
Several subway lines run directly through Bushwick including the L, J, M, and Z trains.
Biking is very popular in Bushwick. There are many miles of bike lanes, the traffic is never too bad, and there are plenty of Citi Bike docking stations to choose from.
Driving is a bit uncommon in this neighborhood due to the younger crowd that lives here. That said, traffic is light and parking is plentiful, so driving is a great option here.
