Boerum Hill

Originally known for drugs, prostitution and crime, Boerum Hill has become the model of some of the positive effects of gentrification. Boerum Hill is now clean, safe and family-friendly and is a irresistible location for those looking to rent their new apartment/home in a "quiet and residential", "friendly and tight-knit" and "hip and vibrant" neighborhood. The area is easily accessible via subway and is known it's many great shops and eateries along Atlantic Avenue, Smith and Court streets. Most of the neighborhood inventory consists of pre-war housing stock although there have been more mid-rise and high-rise buildings in development over the years.

Neighborhood: Boerum Hill

Population Density: More densely populated than either Brooklyn or New York in the aggregate. Heavily residential, with lots of families.

Adjacent Neighborhoods: Cobble Hill, Downtown Brooklyn, Gowanus, Fort Greene

Public Transit: F,G (Bergen St) / M, R (Union St)

What’s Here?: In a word, Boerum Hill is charming. With its tree-lined streets, classic brownstones, chic boutiques, and great restaurants, this neighborhood is easy to love. Boerum Hill combines “quiet and residential”, “friendly and tight-knit”,with “hip and vibrant” seamlessly. Throw in convenient subway access and good public schools and this neighborhood is nearly irresistible.

Flat or Tall?: Lots of pre-war housing stock in Boerum Hill, along with mid-rise and new high-rise construction.

History: Boerum Hill has come a long way. Originally farmland, the neighborhood had become known in recent years for drugs, prostitution, and crime. Today, however, Boerum Hill is a model of the some of the positive effects of gentrification. It has changed into a clean, safe and family-friendly neighborhood.

Activities: Atlantic Avenue, Smith and Court streets are lined with great shops and eateries (Rucola, Saul, The Grocery, and countless more). Boerum Hill is a great place to grab a great cup of coffee at one of the many coffee shops, including Clover’s Fine Art Gallery and Bacchus Cafe. Or catch a show at Bar Tabac or Hank’s Saloon.

Check it out: With so many local gems, everyone is sure to find a favorite restaurant here. Carroll Park is small and lovely, and should not be missed.
