Prospect Heights

Located at the northwest corner of Prospect Park, Prospect Heights is a relatively quiet and small neighborhood that comes with a fusion of the old and the new. While most of the neighborhood has been designated a Historic District by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, newer developments and high-rise condos have been cropping up in the normally leafy brownstone-lined streets. It's proximity to Barclays Centers gives the neighborhood convenient transportation and endless entertainment options such as shopping and dinning. Prospect Height's close proximity to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Public Library, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music also provides plenty of activities for residents to enjoy.

Neighborhood: Prospect Heights

Population Density: 17,631 people; population density 51,473 people per square mile (Brooklyn-wide: 34,917 people per square mile)

Adjacent Neighborhoods: Park Slope, Crown Heights, Fort Greene

Public Transit: 2/3, N/R/W (Barclays Center), B/Q

What’s Here?: Prospect Heights is a rapidly evolving neighborhood of leafy brownstone-lined streets interspersed with new high-rise developments and townhouses. In the flourishing commercial center, you can now find everything from excellent upscale dining at new American spots like James and the Vanderbilt to old-school diners and soul food joints. Shopping options reflect the same range, with indie clothing stores, boutique wine shops and quaint bakeries sharing real estate with swanky cocktail lounges like Weather Up and gritty dive bars.

Nestled at the northwest corner of Prospect Park and bounded by the busy thoroughfares of Flatbush, Atlantic and Washington Avenues, the area blends the picturesque vibe of Park Slope with a less-polished edge. Proximity to Barclays Center offers convenient transportation with connections to multiple subways and the LIRR.

Get a dose of culture at the nearby Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Public Library. Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music to the west offer endless entertainment options.

Flat or Tall?: Small and relatively quiet, Prospect Heights is a fusion of modern and old, characterized by tree-lined residential blocks, with a generous mix of restaurants, bars and shops on the larger streets like Vanderbilt Avenue. Newer developments and high-rise condos are cropping up more, juxtaposed against older reconstruction projects and brownstones.

History: Much of the neighborhood has been designated a Historic District by the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The ethnically diverse, predominately middle-class area has Jewish, Italian, Greek, and German cultural roots, among others.

Activities: Nosh on warm doughnuts at seasonally-focused 606 R&D and modern Japanese at Chuko Ramen, then shop for anything from rare tea at Chrysanthemum to vintage books at Unnameable Books. Visit the Brooklyn Museum and walk through the northern paths of Prospect Park. Finish with some of the city’s most-praised Italian at Franny’s.

Check It Out: Don’t miss the annual Labor Day West Indian Parade Day, and the weekly farmers market in Grand Army Plaza.
