Cobble Hill

Tired of the Brooklyn hustle and bustle? Perhaps it's time to check out Cobble Hill, a younger, hipper and more compact version of the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. The cozy area, comprised of just 22 square blocks, attracts more and more creative professionals and young families each year with its gorgeous Italianate style brownstones and well-maintained 19th century brick row houses. Residents of the area enjoy the benefits of living within close distance to Manhattan and downtown Brooklyn while also living in a quiet neighborhood with a close-knit community. Once settled, be sure to check out Smith Street for your dose of local fashion, hip art galleries and farm-to-table delicacies. Cobble Hill has plenty to offer!

Neighborhood: Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

Population Density: 7,885, with a population density of approximately 59,663/square mile (Brooklyn population density is 34,917/sq. mile)

Adjacent Neighborhoods: Brooklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, and Carroll Gardens.

Public Transit: F/G (Bergen Street, Carroll Street), R to Union Street

What’s Here?: Nestled up again the tony enclave of Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill acts like its younger, hipper, more compact little sister. Just 22 square blocks comprise the cozy, mostly historic district area, which attracts creative professionals, young families and writerly types with its leafy, narrow streets chock full of trendy clothing boutiques and restaurants that make this place the destination for brunch.

The bustling Court Street is home to a number of old-school Italian meat markets and shops offering Middle Eastern fare including the legendary Sahadi’s as well as a newly renovated Trader Joe’s, where the lines, or lack thereof, will make you swear off Manhattan forever. The civic-minded can take a short walk to downtown Brooklyn, where city workers at the borough’s impressive headquarters get things done!

Flat or Tall?: The very definition of picturesque, residential Cobble Hill houses gorgeous Italianite style brownstones and well-maintained 19th century brick row houses with nary a tall building, or a particularly modern one, in sight.

History: First designated “Ponkiesbergh” when it was settled by the Dutch in the mid 1600′s, Cobble Hill earned its current moniker for the deposits of cobble stones that were used to make buttresses in several early American battles. For most of the 1800′s, the historically Italian area was a relatively rural part of “South Brooklyn”. The establishment of the New York City Landmark Preservation Commission in the mid-sixties saved the neighborhood from massive overdevelopment and economic inflation, leaving the well-preserved village that it is today.

Activities: Head down Smith Street for your dose of local fashion, hip art galleries, and farm-to-table delicacies and plot your next novel while people-watching at Bar Tabac. A Saturday afternoon might find you at a Painted Pot class with the kids, or out on a date at the hip restaurant Battersby. Afterward, let the mixologist at the famed Clover Club concoct one of the finest cocktails in the city, attitude free. Catch the latest Woody Allen flick at Cobble Hill Cinemas, or enjoy an artisanal cone at the brick and mortar outpost of haute ice cream purveyors Van Leeuwen. A stroll through the area on a nice night will find most of your neighbors doing the same.

Check it out: Support the last of the local bookstores at BookCourt with weekly readings by up-and-coming authors; support your local ‘no-kill’ animal shelter by celebrating Oktoberfest on the 12th.
