As soon as you enter this neighborhood, you will see how clean and polished it is. The foliage, streets, walls and buildings throughout the neighborhood are all maintained and many of the streets are lined with old Victorian styled homes. However, if you are looking to rent in other types of buildings, Shawmut has a variety of those too.

The neighborhood is quite diverse and its location makes it popular for commuting professionals. The large number of parks throughout the neighborhood makes it perfect for families as well. The restaurants, shops, and cafes in the neighborhood also help to give off a “posh” type of feel as well.

Rest assured, however, that the people here are still great. While you may expect them to be stuck up and elitist, that is not the case. Despite the look and feel of their neighborhood, people from Shawmut are down to earth and accepting of everyone, which makes sense as their residents come from all different types of backgrounds, cultures, and races.

While the South End of Boston (and thus the neighborhood of Shawmut) was built and inhabited many years after other neighborhoods in Boston, there is still a lot of history in this neighborhood. Shawmut and the rest of South End was first constructed as a residential area for people in the crowded areas of in the Downtown and Beacon Hill neighborhoods. It worked for a while as wealthy people moved in, but after some financial crises, the area became poor. A large number of immigrants called this area home, as did a large number of gay men. This reputation of a diverse but poor neighborhood persisted for a while, but then soon it became a wealthy, diverse, and desirable area again and this high-class vibe has stuck around.

Like most of the South End of Boston, the rent in the Shawmut neighborhood is quite high in comparison to other neighborhoods around Boston. In fact, it is normal to see rents well over $2000 for standard one bedroom apartments. You can find places to rent for a few hundred dollars less, as long as you are okay with a studio or a lack of amenities and style. Of course, if you want something bigger or more stylish, you will be paying a pretty penny. The location of this neighborhood, and the fact that there is always something going on here, definitely factor into the relatively high rents.

While public transit is quite common and plentiful throughout Boston, there are no subway routes that go within this neighborhood. While this can be a tad annoying, there are a few stations located within only a few minutes of this neighborhood so a bit of walking can help you if taking the subway is your goal. If taking public transit is your preferred method of traveling to and from Shawmut, taking a bus is the way to go, as there are a few stops in or around this neighborhood.

The polished and manicured roads, sidewalks, shrubs, and parks also make this neighborhood an attractive place to walk, if you are able to. Driving is always possible, but can be difficult and weary in this neighborhood. There is a lack of parking available in this neighborhood and with the almost constant foot traffic, it can take you awhile to get anywhere, even if you are only going a short distance.

The Beehive is one of the best venues in all of Boston to see live jazz music and enjoy some creative dishes and cocktails.
• The Cathedral of the Holy Cross is located right beside this neighborhood and is the largest Catholic Church in all of New England. Inside and out, it is a beautiful piece of art and you should definitely check out, no matter what your religious affiliation is.
• One of the largest and best parks in this neighborhood full of them is Peters Park. Peters Park is 5 acres in size and has a number of different activity spaces such as sports courts, playgrounds, lawn spaces and even dog runs. While this is perhaps the best park in the neighborhood, checking out all of the parks around this neighborhood should be on your bucket list too.
• While it is a bit north of Shawmut, the Wilbur Theatre is one of the premier places to view comedy shows, musical acts and other performances in the city. It has a ton of history and with it being so close to this neighborhood, you would be doing yourself a disservice by not checking it out at least once.
