We\u2019ve been bombarded with scandals, controversies, and conspiracies. As Hillary and the Donald go pantsuit to \u201chair\u201d, we\u2019ve been left with a hunger for some cold hard data. As a data-driven real estate startup, RentHop recognizes the magnitude of the situation. Not only will renters and brokers be affected, but as half the country simultaneously moves to Canada, <strong>rent prices may finally decrease<\/strong>! We feel it is our duty to lend some of our data science muscle and weigh in on this nightmare.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our key Los Angeles County findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In Los Angeles County, Hillary has raised $26.17 million from 24,735 donors giving her a majority of donors in 239 zip codes <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Trump leads in 31 zip codes across LA county, with 5,754 donors and $1.825 million<\/li>\n<li><strong>Many neighborhoods near the edge of Los Angeles county are contested or favor Trump<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Gary Johnson has just 155 donors and Jill Stein only 108<\/li>\n<li>Evan McMullin is a real candidate and he has 11 real donors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The map and graph below<\/strong> show the share of unique donors each candidate has in zip codes across Southern California. The drop down list allows you to type in a zip code or county. You can also click a zip code on the map. <strong>Purple areas<\/strong> are where neither Clinton nor Trump have more than 55% of the donors. <strong>Light blue and light red<\/strong> represent areas where the candidate has 55-70% of the donors, and <strong>dark blue or red represents a 70+% majority.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 740px; width: 100%; position: relative; overflow: hidden; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 105%; height: 0px; position: relative; width: 100%;\">\n<div style=\"position: absolute; height: 100%; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.renthop.com\/study\/assets\/los-angeles-political-oct-2016\/LA-unique-donors-graph-map.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As you can see, Hillary is holding it down pretty well across most of central LA, but as soon as we look north or east, support for her wavers. Hillary\u2019s 80% lead in the more populous LA county does outweigh the many areas where Trump is leading, but it\u2019s still a relatively close race for such a deep blue state.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Some interesting facts about the surrounding LA area<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>San Bernardino County (or at least the wallets of) favors Donald, with 1,257 donors to Hillary\u2019s 904<\/li>\n<li>Hillary leads narrowly in Ventura County, with 1,181 donors to Donald\u2019s 1,150<\/li>\n<li>Orange, Kern, and Riverside Counties all favor Trump in terms of donor count<\/li>\n<li>Hillary leads in San Diego and Santa Barbara Counties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The data for this study was provided by the Federal Election Commission (<a href=\"http:\/\/fec.gov\/disclosurep\/PDownload.do\">FEC.gov<\/a>). Here, disclosures for all campaigns can be found, documenting every dollar in and out. The most recent disclosure, dated October 21, 2016, contains nearly 6 million lines of donor data, since the beginning of the election cycle. <strong>We\u2019ve chosen to rank zip codes by donor counts instead of dollar amounts, as we feel this better represents how many people support each candidate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are a few LA Zip Codes Where Hillary is Untouchable<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>90026 <strong>(Echo Park \/ Silver Lake)<\/strong> \u2013 274 Donors to Trump\u2019s 6 \u2013 97.2% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>90405 <strong>(Santa Monica)<\/strong> \u2013 433 donors to Trump\u2019s 18 \u2013 95.6% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>90068 <strong>(Hollywood Hills)<\/strong> \u2013 455 donors to Donald\u2019s 21 \u2013 95.4% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>90069 <strong>(West Hollywood)<\/strong> \u2013 680 donors to Trump\u2019s 29 \u2013 95.2% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>90291 <strong>(Venice)<\/strong> \u2013 368 donors to Trump\u2019s 15 \u2013 95.1% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>90210 <strong>(Beverly Hills)<\/strong> \u2013 593 donors to Trump\u2019s 82 \u2013 87.7% Donor Share<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>There are quite a few zip codes where Mrs. Clinton has 100% of the donors, but most had 10 or less donors. The same is true for Mr. Trump.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald has a Huge Lead in These LA Zip Codes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>92320 <strong>(Calimesa)<\/strong> \u2013 19 donors to Clinton\u2019s 0 \u2013 100% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>93308 <strong>(Bakersfield)<\/strong> \u2013 57 to 10 \u2013 85.1% of donors (he also has 80% in Bakersfield 93312)<\/li>\n<li>92860 <strong>(Norco, Riverside)<\/strong> \u2013 56 Donors to Clinton\u2019s 10 \u2013 84.8%<\/li>\n<li>92307 <strong>(Apple Valley)<\/strong> \u2013 59 donors to Clinton\u2019s 13 \u2013 82% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>92886 <strong>(Yorba Linda)<\/strong> \u2013 152 donors to Clinton\u2019s 60 \u2013 70% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>92649 <strong>(Huntington Beach)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 140 donors to Clinton\u2019s 57 \u2013 69.7% Donor Share<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a \u201cunique donor\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To calculate unique donors, we combed through 5.9 million donations, looking at the names, dates, and zip codes. We removed common prefixes (Dr., Mr., Mrs, Ms,) that are often added accidentally or inconsistently across forms, and shortened 9-digit zip codes to 5 digits, since some candidates weren\u2019t collecting the longer version, and many people don\u2019t know theirs. People that have changed their names or moved in between donations could artificially inflate these numbers. After grouping donations\u00a0from the same name and zip code together, <strong>we found there were just over 1.3 million unique donors between all candidates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>We at RentHop<\/i> recognize that this is just one take on the current political climate, and it may under or over-represent some demographics. We believe in the power of knowledge and the transparency of open data to allow voters and all people to make informed decisions.
