We\u2019ve been bombarded with scandals, controversies, and conspiracies. As Hillary and the Donald go pantsuit to \u201chair\u201d, we\u2019ve been left with a hunger for some cold hard data. As a data-driven real estate startup, RentHop recognizes the magnitude of the situation. Not only will renters and brokers be affected, but as half the country simultaneously moves to Canada,\u00a0<strong>rent prices may finally decrease!<\/strong> We feel it is our duty to lend some of our data science muscle and weigh in on this nightmare.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Key Chicago Findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In Cook County, Hillary has raised $9.59 million from 9,829 donors <\/strong>(up 2,000 since last month) giving her a majority of donors in <strong>100 zip codes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Trump leads in <strong>53 zip codes across Cook County<\/strong>, with 2,704 donors and $587,054<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cook County <\/strong>is the <em>only<\/em> Northeast Illinois county where Hillary is strongly in favor<\/li>\n<li>Gary Johnson has <strong>just 89 donors<\/strong> and Jill Stein <strong>only 59<\/strong> in Cook County<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The map and graph below<\/strong> show the share of <strong>unique donors<\/strong> each candidate has in zip codes across Northeast Illinois. The drop down list allows you to type in a zip code or county. You can also click a zip code on the map. <strong>Purple areas<\/strong> are where neither Clinton nor Trump have more than 55% of the donors. <strong>Light blue and light red<\/strong> represent areas where the candidate has 55-70% of the donors, and <strong>dark blue or red represents a 70+% majority.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 740px; width: 100%; position: relative; overflow: hidden; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\">\n<div style=\"padding-bottom: 102%; height: 0px; position: relative; width: 100%;\">\n<div style=\"position: absolute; height: 100%; width: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.renthop.com\/study\/assets\/chicago-il-political-oct-2016\/chi-unique-donors-graph-map.html\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As you can see, Hillary is holding it down pretty well in downtown Chicago, but as soon as we look north, south, or west, support for her wavers. Hillary\u2019s 77.5% of donors in more populous Cook County does narrowly outweigh the many areas where Trump is leading, but it\u2019s still a relatively close race for such a historically blue state.<\/p>\n<p>The data for this study was provided by the Federal Election Commission (<a href=\"http:\/\/fec.gov\/disclosurep\/PDownload.do\">FEC.gov<\/a>). Here, disclosures for all campaigns can be found, documenting every dollar in and out. The most recent disclosure, dated October 21, 2016, contains nearly 6 million lines of donor data, since the beginning of the election cycle. <strong>We\u2019ve chosen to rank zip codes by donor counts instead of dollar amounts, as we feel this better represents how many people support each candidate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Here are a few Chicago area Zip Codes Where Hillary is Untouchable<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60653 <strong>(Bronzeville)<\/strong> \u2013 23 donors to Trump\u2019s 0 \u2013 100% donor share<\/li>\n<li>60637 <strong>(Hyde Park\/ UChicago)<\/strong> \u2013 141 donors to Trump\u2019s 2 \u2013 97.2% (96.5% in neighboring 60615 where Obama\u2019s house is at)<\/li>\n<li>60622 <strong>(Wicker Park)<\/strong> \u2013 213 donors to Trump\u2019s 8 \u2013 95.2% donor share<\/li>\n<li>60202 <strong>(Evanston)<\/strong> \u2013 242 donors to Trump\u2019s 12 \u2013 95.3% donor share<\/li>\n<li>60657 <strong>(Lake View) <\/strong>\u2013 540 to Trump\u2019s 25 \u2013 94.4% of donors<\/li>\n<li>60614 <strong>(Lincoln Park)<\/strong> \u2013 646 donors to Trump\u2019s 38 \u2013 94% donor share<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are quite a few zip codes where each candidate had 100% or close to that of the donors, but most had 10 or less donors. The Zip Codes that favored Hillary were all generally in the downtown area, with support for Hillary fading fast as we reach the edge of Cook County.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Donald has a Huge Lead in These Chicago Zip Codes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60171 <strong>(River Grove)<\/strong> \u2013 11 donors to Clinton\u2019s 0 \u2013 100% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>60084 <strong>(Wauconda)<\/strong> \u2013 22 to Clinton\u2019s 3 \u2013 88% of donors<\/li>\n<li>60081 <strong>(Spring Grove)<\/strong> \u2013 19 donors to Clinton\u2019s 3 \u2013 86.4% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>60544 <strong>(Plainfield)<\/strong> \u2013 33 Donors to Clinton\u2019s 8 \u2013 80.5%<\/li>\n<li>60101 <strong>(Addison)<\/strong> \u2013 32 donors to Clinton\u2019s 9 \u2013 78% Donor Share<\/li>\n<li>60477 <strong>(Tinley Park)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 43 donors to Clinton\u2019s 14 \u2013 75.4% Donor Share<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is a \u201cunique donor\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To calculate unique donors, we combed through <strong>5.9 million donations<\/strong>, looking at the names, dates, and zip codes. We removed common prefixes (Dr., Mr., Mrs, Ms,) that are often added accidentally or inconsistently across forms, and shortened 9-digit zip codes to 5 digits, since some candidates weren\u2019t collecting the longer version, and many people don\u2019t know theirs. People that have changed their names or moved in between donations could artificially inflate these numbers. After grouping donations\u00a0from the same name and zip code together,\u00a0<strong>we found there were just over 1.3 million unique donors between all candidates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some interesting facts about the surrounding area<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lake County is the only other county <\/strong>where a majority of donors<strong> (54.6%) <\/strong>support<strong> Hillary<\/strong> 1118 to 907, a large increase since last month, when it was 926 to 848 donors<\/li>\n<li><strong>Trump has 67% of the donors<\/strong> in McHenry and Will Counties<\/li>\n<li>In most areas, even if Trump has more donors, <strong>Hillary still raised more money<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Evan McMullin, <i>that guy you\u2019ve definitely heard of<\/i>, is a real candidate and he has 2 real donors in the 9 counties we looked at<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>We at RentHop<\/i>\u00a0recognize that this is just one take on the current political climate, and it may under or over-represent some demographics. We believe in the power of knowledge and the transparency of open data to allow voters and all people to make informed decisions.
