Full of families and students, North Riverdale is the northernmost neighborhood in all of NYC. Quiet and prosperous, North Riverdale is essentially a suburb that largely resembles smaller, upstate towns while still being part of the Big Apple.
Formerly part of upstate New York, North Riverdale began its American life as estates for the wealthy elite of Manhattan. The College of Mount Saint Vincent was established in 1847 as an academy for young women. This school attracted more people to the neighborhood.
Once the West Bronx became part of NYC in 1874, more people began to move to the area, though it was still mostly for the wealthy elites of the city. Once the entire Bronx became part of NYC in 1898, younger students and professionals moved up to the area to be close to Mount Saint Vincent.
North Riverdale, being a haven for the wealthy and middle class, escaped much of the turmoil other parts of NYC faced in the 1900’s. Today, North Riverdale is still popular with families and younger singles alike.
The College of Mount Saint Vincent takes up a good portion of this neighborhood.The rest of the area is made up of row houses, mid rise apartment complexes, and single family homes. High rises do exist here, but they are few and far between.
North Riverdale is more densely populated than other parts of Riverdale, but it’s still a place of luxury. More middle class families, students, and professionals live here for the extra space living arrangements afford them.
Still, this neighborhood is very subdued. People here like to go at a slower pace. There’s hardly a night life to speak of. That said, there’s a ton of green space and restaurants to enjoy and easy access to both upstate and the busier parts of the city.
North Riverdale is ideal for families. There are good schools, easy access to hospitals, and plenty of green space for outdoor activities. There are also easy options for travel whether you’re seeking to enter the rest of the city or go upstate.
There are no direct subway lines to North Riverdale, but the 1 train will land you close by.
Biking is popular in this area. While Citi Bike docking stations are few and far between, the streets are wide and traffic is light.
Driving is the most popular form of transportation here. Traffic is light, parking is ample, and there’s access to major highways.
