Northwestern Queens is comprised of neighborhoods such as Astoria, Jackson Heights, North Corona, Corona, Flushing, Elmhurst, Woodside, Maspeth, Sunnyside, Middle Village, Ridgewood, Rego Park, and Lefrak City. The area is also home to the world's largest Chinatown outside of Asia in Flushing and Citi Field where the New York mets play baseball!

Population: Approx. 860,000 people (Astoria: 124,179, Jackson Heights: 107,629, North Corona: 29,849, Corona: 51,135, Flushing: 24,889, Elmhurst: 93,731, Woodside: 48,279, Maspeth: 26,749, Sunnyside: 79,414, Middle Village: 32,060, Ridgewood: 90,637, Rego Park: 72,741, LeFrak City: 81,327).

Adjacent Neighborhoods: Hunters Point, Forest Hills, Jamaica, Kew Gardens, Bayside.

Public Transit: Multiple stops on the N/Q (Astoria), E/F/M/R (Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, Elmhurst, Rego Park), and 7 (Woodside, Corona, Flushing) subway lines.

What’s Here?: Northwestern Queens is a collection of largely residential, middle class neighborhoods, with a tremendous amount of cultural diversity. ‘Little Manila,’ a large Filipino community, stretches through Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside.

The New York Mets play baseball at Citi Field, on the border of Corona and Flushing. LaGuardia Airport borders Astoria, East Elmhurst, and Jackson Heights. Top eateries in Northwestern Queens include widely-praised Thai restaurants SriPraPhai and Ayada, Kabab Cafe (Middle Eastern) and Taverna Kyclades (Greek) in Astoria, Tortilleria Nixtamal in Corona, and Spicy & Tasty, a highly-regarded Szechuan restaurant in Flushing.

Flat or Tall?: Much of this area of Queens is one- and two-story single-family houses, with some multi-family structures along many major corridors but relatively little in terms of luxury new construction. Boulevard Gardens, in Elmhurst, is a complex of 10 six-story buildings, typical for the area, although Astoria and Ridgewood do have some larger buildings. In general, low-rises, not high-rises, dominate.

History: Queens became a borough of New York City in 1898, and would be the fourth-most populous city in the U.S. if it were still on its own. Historically, it has been home to a wide range of immigrant communities, from the Irish and German in Astoria and Middle Village in the 1800s, to Central and South American, South Asian, and Caribbean immigrants today. The 1964-65 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows was a highlight of Queens in the 20th century, and today the area has grown to become the most ethnically diverse county in the country.

Activities: Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is home to the New York Mets, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (home of the U.S. Open), the Queens Zoo, Queens Art Museum, and New York Hall of Science. The Museum of the Moving Image is located on an old Paramount movie set in Astoria.

Check it out: A huge Greek festival comes through Astoria each May, the Colombian Independence Day Festival is in July, and the U.S. Open takes over Flushing for two weeks over August and September.
