RED HOOK
Red Hook is a fun filled, waterfront, residential neighborhood
right next to Carroll Gardens. While most people think of Red Hook
as "The neighborhood with the IKEA," there's so much more to see
here, including museums, restaurants, and even an art gallery or
two.
Named by the Dutch for the red clay that was found here when the
area was colonized in 1636. The area was used for shipping and
family estates until the American Revolution, when a large fort,
called Fort Defiance, was built just before the Battle of Long
Island.
The 1800's saw Red Hook transform into an industrial powerhouse.
The ports were revitalized between the 1840's and 60's due to the
deepening of the Gowanus canal and increased business from the
formation of the Erie Canal. One might think this was great for the
neighborhood. However, this success attracted organized crime by
the 1920's.
Red Hook continued to have a poor reputation throughout the
