Surrounded by The Brooklyn Navy Yard, Downtown Brooklyn,
Prospect Heights, and Clinton Hill, Fort Greene is a hip
neighborhood that is great for young professionals and families
alike. Rife with historic brownstones, this neighborhood feels like
home.
Fort Greene is named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael
Greene, who constructed a fort in the area in 1776. After the war,
the area was used to house workers of the new Brooklyn Navy Yard,
though several small farms were also still present from the
original colony.
Slavery was outlawed in New York in 1827, which allowed the
black population of Fort Greene to grow as many people moved to the
area seeking work in the Navy Yard. The farmers of the area sold
their land to this population and they developed the area as a
haven for the abolitionist movement, hosting speakers like Harriet
Tubman and Frederick Douglass.
During the 1900's, Fort Greene experienced a cultural boom,
opening BAM in 1908…
