The Near East Side, New East Side or “Lakeshore East” is a premium neighborhood in downtown Chicago. Part of the Loop community area it features many of Chicago’s tallest buildings. Apartments here are surrounded by beauty, with Lake Michigan to the East, The Chicago River to the north, and Millennium Park to the south. The area is historically a business district, but continues to develop. The award-winning Lakeshore East urban development has had a huge impact on making this a hot new neighborhood. The Randolph/Wabash stop on the CTA gives access to all trains except the Red Line, which is just one more block west.
Residential buildings in the area are all luxury condos and high-end apartments. Two-bedroom apartments start around $3,000 here. If you’re looking to rent a one-bedroom, there’s tough competition and they run well above $2,200 per month. Most apartments are in newly developed, multi-unit buildings and many residents mortgage their home instead of renting.
The land that makes up the Near East Side was originally water and rail yards. The Aon Center and One Prudential Plaza buildings built in the 1950’s were the first to be built in the area. The first building of the Lakeshore East development joined the area in 2005 along with the Lakeshore East Park. Developing the area was a challenge due to the triple-level street system of Chicago.
The New East Side is a beautiful mixture of first-class hotel offerings, as well large businesses like the insurance giants Aon and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Residents of the area are located within walking distance to work as well as a plethora of entertainment options. The $4 billion Lakeshore East development complex features a 4-acre botanic garden with a dog park and playground, making this area extremely family-friendly. The New Eastside Association of Residents (NEAR) has represented the community since 1991 and ensures that the quality of life will be upheld.
There are 4,295 residents in New Eastside, and population density is about twice the rest of the city. Median household income is $95,533. Nearly 70% of households are married couples with children. Private schools are the preferred option for K-12 students.
Lakeshore East Park is the city’s first and currently only free wireless park.
People don’t come to the Near East Side for the nightlife; it’s a refined escape from that. Take a walk along the Chicago Riverwalk here, or hop on one of the ‘Chicago’s First Lady’ sightseeing cruises to take in the beautiful architecture of Chicago. Stop into Mezcalina for delicious Mexican fare, or take advantage of the Mariano’s gourmet grocery and make dinner in your beautiful new apartment.
