DePaul University is a massive private university in the North Side of Chicago, most of it overlapping with Lincoln Park. The area around the campus is generally just called DePaul because of the enormity and reign of the school. Halsted St bounds the region on the east, Diversey Pkwy on the north and the Chicago River to the southwest. Contained within DePaul are Lathrop, Wrightwood, and Ranch Triangle, but renters here may find themselves looking at apartments in Wicker Park and Bucktown too. Commuters have a have a choice between the CTA Brown, Purple or Red Line ‘L’ trains.
Apartments around DePaul are primarily low-rise buildings with less than ten units. The high student demographic makes for cost variation in the apartments available. Some two and three-bedroom rentals can be found for around $2,000 while many luxury units will be well over $3,000. It is very common for residents to rent instead of own here.
The DePaul area, like Lincoln Park and Lake View, grew in the mid 1800’s as people looked to settle outside the city on larger plots of land for more reasonable prices. The DePaul University was founded in 1898 on 36 acres in Lincoln Park and quickly grew to over 1,000 enrolled within 20 years. This has grown to over 23,000 and housing and businesses have expanded too.
Walking through DePaul you’ll notice a suburban atmosphere with many small businesses and bike-friendly tree-lined streets. Crime is considerably lower here and you’ll find a high proportion of the people walking around in the day are wearing backpacks, but they might not actually live in the area. The area is very attractive for young couples, grad students, and teachers. Nightlife in the area is mostly bars, small music venues and affordable restaurants, although DePaul is in close proximity to Lincoln Park’s potent restaurant and shopping district.
Median household income in DePaul is $80,205 even factoring in the area’s many students. There is a higher than average proportion of residents aged 20-29 and a large majority hold at least a Bachelor’s Degree.
