History

The larger neighborhood of Allston, which encompasses St. Elizabeth, was originally a part of the town of Brighton. In the late 1860s, the opening of a new railroad depot led the area becoming known as Allston. It was around the railroad and livestock operations that the community of Allston developed.

Compared to the rest of Boston, the cost of living in this neighborhood is relatively average. While many other neighborhoods in the area have experienced a significant cost of living increases, St. Elizabeth’s has remained affordable. Expect a one-bedroom apartment to cost about $1,800 per month. A three-bedroom apartment will run upwards of $3,000 per month. The cost of public transportation can be relatively inexpensive in this neighborhood, but if you plan to drive on your own, expect to pay for the convenience. Gasoline prices tend to be somewhat higher and you can also expect to pay a premium for paid parking.

Getting around St. Elizabeth’s is incredibly easy. In fact, the neighborhood has been ranked as one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Boston. Here, you’ll find spaciously wide sidewalks and numerous bus lanes that make it ideal for cycling enthusiasts. For those who prefer to use public transportation, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Green Line offers stops along Commonwealth Avenue. Additionally, there are several bus routes that extend throughout St. Elizabeth. If you prefer to drive on your own, be aware that parking in this neighborhood can often be challenging, although there are some fee-based lots situated around, but expect them to be somewhat steep in price.

With an impressive number of parks, including Rogers Park, the whole family can be working out as there are jogging paths, playgrounds, and sports fields. After sweating it out, residents love going to Jim's Deli and Restaurant for some comfort food. Here, you can enjoy cafeteria-style specials served by the owners. And, as mentioned, there are bars for all styles – whether you want to dance and drink all night or grab a beer with friends, St. Elizabeth has plenty of night spots. All in all, St. Elizabeth has it all.
