Kenmore

A popular neighborhood in Boston is Kenmore. Kenmore is a vibrant neighborhood with top-notch schools, hospitals, and museums. The neighborhood is full of culture, interesting people, great restaurants, and many people love it for the great, central location. Considered a single neighborhood, this area is actually comprised of numerous distinct sections and sub-neighborhoods. Situated in eastern Boston, this quaint neighborhood is a popular choice among college students. If you're looking for a vibrant neighborhood that has much to offer, this might just be the neighborhood for you.

Atmosphere

The neighborhood of Kenmore offers a diverse selection of activities and things to see and do. Catch a Red Sox game, stop in at the House of Blues, or visit the Museum of Fine Arts, where you will find almost half a million artifacts and objects. The Museum of Fine Arts is actually one of the largest art institutions in the country. Renowned for its Post-Impressionist and French Impressionist collections, the Museum of Fine Arts boasts works by Degas, Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, and Gauguin, among many others.

Small, independently owned shops are nestled throughout the neighborhood, although there are also more commercial developments. Among them is Kenmore Square, located at the intersection of Beacon Street, Commonwealth Avenue, and Brookline Avenue. Here visitors and locals can enjoy a conglomeration of hotels, bars, and shops. For those looking for a vibrant nightlife scene, Lansdowne Street is well known for its nightlife and music venues. Boylston Street and Brookline Avenue are also popular destinations for bars, restaurants, national retailers, and movie theaters.

Running through the Fens and extending out the Charles River is the Muddy River. The neighboring park includes gently sloping lawns with lush shade trees, benches that are perfect for relaxing, lovely rustic stone bridges, a fragrant rose garden, and a playground for the younger set. There is even a space reserved for local residents to cultivate their own community garden.Throughout the neighborhood are charming brick walk-ups, brownstone town homes, and apartment buildings, most of which were built between the late 19th century and the early 20th century.

History

The area that currently comprises the neighborhood of Kenmore was formed through a land annex from the nearby neighborhood of Brookline during the late 19th century. At the time, it was thought that the area would provide housing options for wealthy residents and ultimately become a high-class neighborhood in Boston. Property values did rise; however, educational institutions began to spring up in the area.

Today, the price for homes in the neighborhood can be somewhat steep for what has become largely known as a college town. Rates for studios and one-bedroom apartments can range between $1,500 and $1,800 per month, while a two-bedroom apartment can reach nearly $3,000 per month.

Getting Around

Getting around Kenmore is relatively easy thanks to the fact that the neighborhood is circled by the MBTA Orange Line. Multiple trolley stops ensure you can get around with ease. Keep in mind that getting into and getting around the neighborhood can be challenging when the Red Sox have a home game at Fenway Park. On game days, the MBTA does make the effort of running an additional service, but even so, you can typically expect cars on the Green Line to be filled to capacity. It’s often necessary to wait for several cars before you can actually find space for boarding. Another option would be to drive on your own, but parking garages often tend to fill up relatively fast and the fees can be quite steep.

Check it Out

Whether going to a ballgame at famous Fenway Park or checking out the House of Blues, you can have a good time rubbing elbows with people from all walks of life from all over the world. On a more practical matter, the MBTA orange line makes it incredibly easy to get to and from work. With plenty of museums, restaurants, bars, and plenty of history, Kenmore and its surrounding neighborhoods is a great option to check out.
