What’s Here?: Van Nest is a small neighborhood of low-slung single-family homes, many worn but still solid, tucked up against the southeast edge of the Bronx Zoo and centered around White Plains Road and Morris Park Avenue. The standard array of pizza joints, bodegas, and other retail outlets can be found on the main streets, and stately churches hold down several corners.

Flat or Tall?: Flat, though multi-story residential and commercial buildings dot corners. The low-lying terrain prompted long-ago workers to raise the street level, sometimes after older houses were built, making for some odd-looking entrances.

History: Originally a railroad bedroom community, the area built up around a depot on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, run by Abraham Reynier Van Nest in the late 19th century.

Activities: Befitting its roots as a sleepy suburb, most activities more ambitious than getting a slice or running to the hardware store require leaving the immediate neighborhood, though the less-crowded south entrance to the Bronx Zoo is right around the corner. Also adjacent is the Bronx River Greenway, which offers easy access for runners and bikers. The Bronx River Alliance supports a wide range of activities from historical walks to kayaking along its shaded, leafy banks.

Check it out: Van Nest still has a bit of a 1950s-style New York cozy, insular neighborhood sensibility to it. That’s reflected in a recent walking tour called “Raviolis to Cannolis,” and a recently formed organization that has helped make parks and playgrounds safer, and is agitating to make sure the new Metro-North station is called Van Nest and not Parkchester.
