Fun Facts and History of Sutton Place

The Neighborhood of Sutton Place gets its name from the avenue that runs through it. Sutton Place was originally Avenue A as designated by the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, which marked everything east of 1st avenue as avenues A, B, C, etc. In 1875, Effingham B. Sutton, a successful entrepreneur, built a series of Brownstones along the avenue. This led people to start calling it “Sutton Place,” a name that was first printed in The New York Times in 1883, and officially changed that same year.

In the early 1900’s, several townhomes and large, luxury apartment complexes were constructed in the area to house Manhattan’s wealthiest citizens. Unlike other areas in Manhattan that were hit hard by the financial crisis of the 1930’s and 70’s, Sutton Place remained an affluent area for the entirety of its existence. Today the small neighborhood is a quiet, peaceful place.

Sutton Place Buildings

Sutton Place is almost entirely residential, with a few stores and restaurants peppered around the area. The buildings are largely brownstone row houses and tall art deco structures. Though not the tallest buildings in Manhattan, this neighborhood adds to the skyline in a tasteful way.

Atmosphere of Sutton Place

This neighborhood is insanely residential. Peaceful and quiet, Sutton Place is not meant to attract attention. Almost no tourists come to this area, and that’s how the locals like it. It's so peaceful, one almost forgets that they’re in Manhattan until an ambulance speeds by.

Several waterfront parks add to the serenity of the area, providing beautiful views of the Queensboro Bridge. Living in this area feels like an escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Island.

Family Score for Sutton Place

This neighborhood is perfect for families. It has easy access to hospitals, entertainment, and much more all while being full of spacious apartments and homes. There’s little to no crime in this area, and it's nearby to anything you might need. All in all, Sutton Place is the perfect place to raise a family if you can afford it.

Transportation Options in Sutton Place

While the New York City subway has no direct line to Sutton Place, that’s largely to keep the area secluded. That said, the neighborhood can be most closely accessed via the 4, 5, 6, N, R, and W trains.

Biking isn’t particularly popular here, but it is possible. Bike lanes and Citi Bike docking stations are scarce, however, so it’d be better to walk.

Driving is decently popular here since most people who live in this area pay for parking. However, due to the small size of the neighborhood, as well as the heavy traffic coming to and from Queens, having a car here can be a bit of a chore.
