Sunrise

Sunrise is a city of about 90,000 people and is located just west of Fort Lauderdale. While the city is away from the waterfront views you might think of when you imagine Florida, it is still a great place to live. The weather is beautiful, there is a good mix of developed and undeveloped areas, and it offers convenient access to the rest of Miami. If you are interested in a Miami suburb away from the beach, this might be the spot for you.

Atmosphere

Because it isn’t by the beach, the city is much less busy and not a massive tourist destination like many cities to the east and southeast. As a result, you get a much more family oriented “small-town” feel in Sunrise compared to places like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and others. However, don’t take this as a knock on Sunrise. It has many great schools and parks throughout, which adds to the family-friendliness of the city.

Despite the lack of the beach and all the tourism and events that come with it, there is still plenty going on in Sunrise. The city hosts a number of events each year and there are plenty of places to cool off and enjoy the weather, despite no beaches. However, if you do want to experience the beach, it is only a short drive or ride from Sunrise. This city gives you the convenience to visit the busy tourist areas, without having to live there.

Sunrise is also among the most multi-cultural cities in the country. About a third of the city is white, a third is Hispanic and a third is black. These individuals also come from a wide range of countries as Sunrise is a very accepting and laid back place for anyone to set up shop and start their family.

History

In 1960, a land developer bought a large part of land in Broward County and began to develop it a little to bring potential residents in. Over time, people liked the area and this interest brought with it thousands and thousands of new residents. In the 70s, the area began to experience some real growth and expanded its boundaries by more than 10x. After a bit of challenges here and there with the development, the city has continued to grow and develop, and that shows no signs of slowing down.

While this area is away from the beaches and activity you might find in the bigger cities, don’t think that is going to get you a massive discount in rent, because it won’t. The average rent in Sunrise sits just under $1700. However, as with most cities, rent can vary throughout the area and certain places will cost more, whereas others will be more affordable.

Getting Around

In a city like Sunrise, having a car is almost a requirement. It is a decently large city in terms of size and if you want to get into Miami or other municipalities, driving a car is the easiest and quickest way. Sunrise is connected well via roads to other cities in the area, so driving is a breeze.

When it comes to the commute or traveling throughout Sunrise, the car is once again the best option. While some forms of public transit are available, about 85% of residents either drive or carpool to work. If you are only going a few blocks or want to get some fresh air, walking or biking is an option. However, going on a long trip or to the grocery store is not a very practical option if you walk. If you have the means to do so, invest in a car. It will help you out if you’re planning on living in the suburb of Sunrise.
