Southern Brooklyn is the southernmost part of Brooklyn and includes the neighborhoods of Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend, Coney Island, and Brighton Beach. Largely residential, but also full of fun beaches and attractions, this part of Brooklyn is amazing in the summertime.
The atmosphere of Southern Brooklyn depends heavily on where you are in it. Sheepshead Bay and Gravesend, for example, are much more quiet and residential. The piers attached to these neighborhoods can get lively, but most of the area is pretty peaceful, with large homes capable of supporting families.
Coney Island and Brighton Beach are also residential, but they are much more interested in the entertainment that the beaches and piers provide. These neighborhoods have year round events that keep crowds coming back again and again.
The New York City subway provides tremendous access to this part of Brooklyn. Train lines that travel here are the B, D, F, N, and Q trains.
Biking in this area is pretty popular. Citi Bike docking stations are few and far between here, but the wide streets and lack of heavy traffic make this area ideal for cyclists.
Driving in Sheepshead Bay and Gravesend is very popular given the suburban feel of the neighborhoods. Coney Island and Brighton Beach don’t have as much of a driving presence.
This area of Brooklyn is very safe. Violent crime is extremely rare and crime of every type has been decreasing every year for decades. These are quiet neighborhoods and entertainment capitals, so the city strives to keep Southern Brooklyn as safe as possible. There is also easy access to a number of hospitals in the area.
Gravesend was one of the original Dutch settlements of New Amsterdam. From Gravesend sprouted Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay, and Brighton Beach as leadership acquired more and more land. Once the Dutch lost control of the colony in 1664, the British used the area for Naval bases and landings, especially during the American Revolution.
After the Revolution, Coney Island underwent massive changes. Landfills were used to connect the islands to form one, large island, which was then connected with the larger mainland in the early 1800’s. From there, Southern Brooklyn became the spot for entertainment. Sheepshead Bay was mostly residential, but Gravesend became a gambling capital once race tracks were built, and Coney Island and Brighton Beach were building resorts left and right.
The neighborhoods fell into ruin during several financial crises of the 1900’s. Businesses closed and many attractions fell into disrepair. In the 1990’s the neighborhoods got major facelifts. Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay became havens for immigrants while Coney Island and Brighton Beach polished the looks of their beaches and resorts. Today Southern Brooklyn is a mix of peaceful neighborhoods and epic adventures.
