Largely industrial, Hunters Point is the southernmost part of Long Island City. Currently undergoing a major transformation, this neighborhood within a neighborhood is quickly becoming a powerhouse in the art world.
As part of the greater neighborhood of Long Island City, Hunters Point began life as a neighborhood in the town of Long Island City in 1870 and became part of Queens when the borough became part of Greater New York City in 1898. Once this change happened, Hunters Point became an industrial neighborhood just like the rest of Long Island City.
Hunters Point stayed industrial, though most of the factories that dotted the area were mostly abandoned by the 1990’s. Long Island City switched to being a residential neighborhood in 2001. However, Hunters Point didn’t get the memo until around 2008 when the area became part of the Queens West Project. This project included construction of over 5,000 housing units, most of which have since been completed. Today, the area is a haven for artists and young professionals.
Many older factories still dot this area as they are converted to living spaces and art studios/galleries. That said, newer luxury highrises have sprung up in the area over the last ten years, adding a dazzling skyline that rivals the Manhattan skyline just across the river.
This emerging neighborhood is a large hub for contemporary artists and young professionals. The easy access to Manhattan has made this a popular area for newer city dwellers and long time residents.
While the neighborhood is trendy, it’s not raucous. It’s still pretty quiet and calm most nights, favoring galas rather than parties. The area is mostly home to young people, meaning Hunters Point is energetic and full of ambition.
This area is extremely safe. It’s located in one of the safest neighborhoods in the entire city, infact. There are several good schools here and it has easy access to hospitals. That said, the area is packed with young professionals and artists. Hunters Point isn’t bad for families, but it does lack that more suburban feel that larger families might be seeking.
The New York City subway system provides great access to Hunters Point via the E, M, F, G, and 7 trains.
Biking in the area is pretty popular. Bike lanes are being added as residential buildings are springing up. Citi Bike docking stations are a bit hard to come by, but the ones that are around are easy enough to find.
Driving here can be a pain due to the high volume traffic between LIC and Manhattan. That said, many folks still choose to do it given the rest of Queens is pretty light traffic wise.
