Greenwood Heights is both a neighborhood of industry and livability. While most of the neighborhood is made up of the Green-Wood Cemetery, just southwest of Prospect Park, a good amount of people live here for the waterfront views and easy access to busier parts of Brooklyn.
After playing a major role in the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolution, Greenwood became a cemetery for fallen soldiers of the war. The portion of the neighborhood west of the cemetery was a very popular port, which is why housing started to pop up here.
While still largely industrial, the population of the area grew in the 1800’s, the affordable prices attracting the working class and the newly immigrated. The neighborhood was thriving until the Great Depression whipped out much of the business brought in by factories and the waterfront.
Greenwood Heights became known as an area for the impoverished by the 1960’s. It remained this way until real estate developers tried to pitch the area as part of South Slope. Once people began moving here again, Greenwood Heights took back its own identity. Businesses began opening back up, and now Greenwood Heights is increasing in popularity.
Greenwood Heights has a fascinating collection of buildings, mostly on the shorter side. Wood frame homes can be found next to brick row houses making for a unique look that is hard to find in other parts of Brooklyn.
Greenwood Heights is a relaxing neighborhood with a lot of shopping and dining opportunities. One might think that a neighborhood next to a large graveyard would be a bit macabre. However, the opposite is actually true.
Greenwood Heights is bright and offers great views off the piers. The people who live here enjoy easy access to the rest of Brooklyn, which means they have plenty of options for entertainment while keeping the neighborhood itself nice, quiet, and calm.
While Greenwood Heights isn’t the safest neighborhood in Brooklyn, it’s still vastly improved from where it was in the 1990’s. The crime rate is consistently on the decline and there are plenty of good schools in the area to choose from. The families that live here are happy and enjoy spacious homes. All in all Greenwood Heights is a good neighborhood for families.
The New York City subway system provides access to Greenwood Heights via the D, N, and R trains.
Biking is very popular in the area due to the wide roads and light traffic. Citi Bike docking stations can also be found here for your convenience.
Driving is popular here as well. The traffic is light and parking is ample.
