Fort Greene is named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, who constructed a fort in the area in 1776. After the war, the area was used to house workers of the new Brooklyn Navy Yard, though several small farms were also still present from the original colony.
Slavery was outlawed in New York in 1827, which allowed the black population of Fort Greene to grow as many people moved to the area seeking work in the Navy Yard. The farmers of the area sold their land to this population and they developed the area as a haven for the abolitionist movement, hosting speakers like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass.
During the 1900’s, Fort Greene experienced a cultural boom, opening BAM in 1908 and opening movie theaters in 1920. This growth lasted until the end of WWII, when the Navy Yard started to decline and workers went elsewhere. However, the people of Fort Greene worked with city leadership to restore the area and, by the 1990’s, Fort Greene was back to being pristine.
Most buildings in Fort Greene are short, maxing out around 15 stories tall. Some newer, luxury high rises have been built in the area, but the residents there have a strong stance on changing too much, opting to preserve many of the streets and houses in the neighborhood.
Fort Greene is a relaxing place that has a little something for everyone. Trendy and artistic, yet family friendly, Fort Greene is a place where people smile and wave to their neighbors. There’s a ton of food, culture, and sights to absorb in this neighborhood. The pride felt by the residents of this area is strong, but not abrasive.
